Priscilla and Aquila!

And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. (Acts 18:2)

A special friend of mine requested that I share a small thought on Priscilla and Aquila. So here it goes!

Not only do I want to share a small portion of the historical context of the godly couple, but I also want to share the relevancy of this couple in today's society. This couple is indeed a VERY SPECIAL couple! Let's start by taking a brief look at what Wikipedia has to say about this godly couple. There are a few scripture verses to support their relevancy to us THEN AND NOW.

Priscilla and Aquila, according to Acts 18:2-3, were tentmakers, as Paul is said to have been. Priscilla and Aquila had been among the Jews expelled from Rome by the Roman Emperor Claudius in the year 49 as written by Suetonius. They ended up in Corinth. Paul lived with Priscilla and Aquila for approximately 18 months. Then the couple started out to accompany Paul when he proceeded to Syria, but stopped at Ephesus in the Roman province of Asia, now part of modern Turkey.
In Acts 18:24-28, an important evangelist in Ephesus named Apollos is mentioned as one who "taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately." Priscilla and Aquila were among the earliest known teachers of Christian theology.
In 1 Corinthians 16:19, Paul passes on the greetings of Priscilla and Aquila to their friends in Corinth, indicating that the couple were in his company. Paul founded the church in Corinth,[1Cor 4:15] including their greetings implies that Priscilla and Aquila were also involved in the founding of that church. Since 1 Corinthians discusses a crisis deriving from a conflict between the followers of Apollos and the followers of Cephas (possibly the apostle Peter), it can be inferred that Apollos accompanied Priscilla and Aquila when they returned to Corinth. This happened before 54, when Claudius died and the expulsion of the Jews from Rome was lifted.
In Romans 16:3-4, thought to have been written in 56 or 57, Paul sends his greetings to Priscilla and Aquila and proclaims that both of them "risked their necks" to save Paul's life.

The above portion talks about Priscilla and Aquila from not only a biblical perspective, but from an historical perspective as well. What kind of relevance do they have for not only the godly couples of today, but for those of us singles that have aspirations to get married with that godly man (for the ladies) and for that godly woman (for the guys)?

They are relevant to us today because they have played a VERY BIG role in Christian ministry and in the marketplace. The relevance of their role in our lives from both Christian ministry and marketplace standpoints play a very vital role in the way we are to honor God as a couple no matter where He places us. From an historical perspective, they were tentmakers. That was not only their trade, but their calling as well. It was through their trade that they were able to meet the Apostle Paul and learn from the teachings of God's Word during his visit in Rome. In other words friends, the marketplace is also our mission field. They also played a role in assisting the Apostle Paul in founding the church of Corinth.

It is quite evident from the two roles that I have pointed out that they have made an incredible impact in the lives of the people around them from both a vocational and ministerial standpoint. As a couple, I have come to the personal understanding that they were EXTREMELY PASSIONATE about God, Christian ministry, and the marketplace. Priscilla and Aquila knew how to live life to the fullest as a godly couple with faith, hope, and love. WOW! This couple is definitely an inspiration for us! This couple did most things together in a very supportive manner. I'm also very confident in the Lord that they were just as supportive of one another in many things they didn't do together. This couple was not only purpose driven, they were passion driven to do the work of the Lord at home, at church, and in the marketplace. They even "risked their necks" to save Paul's life.

With that said, let us become modern-day Priscillas and Aquilas! Why? Because there is a lost and dying world out there that is hungry for God! They also can use the incredible inspiration of a godly couple that will make a HUGE difference in their lives as well!

For all the godly couples out there, are the both of you ready to become a modern-day Priscilla and Aquila? For all the singles out there, do you aspire to get married one day to your Priscilla and Aquila?

For both questions, I wholeheartedly hope so!

I promise to all of my awesome followers and readers of this blog that I will eventually get back to posting the christian music videos again soon!
